Actually, two waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls and Matai Falls, are located on the Matai Stream in the Catlins Forest Park. Easy and enjoyable walk, picnic tables and a scenic highway make these falls very popular among the tourists and locals.Walk through regenerating podocarp and broadleaf forest to reach these beautiful falls (10 m). The falls are seen in their best light around midday.

Horseshoe Falls is roughly a 2 hours’ drive away from Invercargill or 1.5-2 hours from Dunedin. The road surface is sealed
From Dunedin travel south on the SH1, then continue on the scenic Chaslands Highway for the next 48 km. A well-signposted carpark is on your right. There are picnic tables but no toilets there.
From the parking follow a signposted Matai Falls Walk which leads you through the native forest to the waterfall's lookout. The walk (10-15 minutes one way) is very easy one and suitable for people of all abilities.
Actually, there are two waterfalls on the Matai Stream - the lower one, Matai Falls, and the upper one, Horseshoe Falls. There is a junction almost at the end of the track: Matai Falls is on your left, and Horseshoe Falls is on your right. It's quite difficult to say which one is better: each has its own charm and beauty.
