Smartphones in India at an effective price of less than Rs 1,000

Vodafone and Micromax are set to jointly offer 4G smartphones in India at an effective price of less than Rs 1,000, which is similar to the amount at which most featurephones are sold. Bharti AirtelBSE recently announced the launch of a 4G smartphone at an effective price of under Rs 1,500 in partnership with handset maker Karbonn.

These launches are taking place to respond to Reliance Industries’ JioPhone, a 4G featurephone, which is being offered with a Jio number for Rs 1,500. Reliance will refund the entire amount after three years, on return of the device. While Jio is subsidising the cost of the device for users, Vodafone and Airtel will give cashbacks to users.
